Election 2014 | Vaught wins Horry Council District 8 seat

vaughtCONWAY — Republican Johnny Vaught captured the Horry County Council District 8 seat Tuesday night over Independent candidate Krystal Dotson.

Vaught recorded 78 percent of votes, while Dotson received 22 percent, according to unofficial results.

Dotson handed in her petition to run as an Independent on the last day to file, and Vaught said he couldn’t sit back despite defeating primary opponents Candace Howell and Daniel Cochran to secure the Republican nomination.

“I never changed the game plan when I went into the general election that worked in the primary. We didn’t know how much of an effort was going to be out there by the opposition. We ran just like we were behind.”

Vaught is a retired college professor and Navy veteran. He credited his win primarily to walking throughout the district and talking to people.

“One of the things I want to address is the need for fire station coverage on S.C. 544,” Vaught said Tuesday night.

He said he plans to work on addressing the issue of fire insurance rates rising along S.C. 544. The increase is because of a change in the fire risk rating system.

He also hopes to get the inbound U.S. 501 lane widened on a quicker pace than the planned 2018 schedule.

Vaught has attended just about every full County Council meeting and every committee meeting since January and he’s well versed in the majority of the county’s issues.

“We’ve got that biker issue that we’re going to have to deal with, too,” he said of the county working with area cities on Atlantic Beach’s Bikefest.
